On 2 December 2025, the AIFCA Members Forum formally adopted the National Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) and Artificial Intelligence Strategy: a landmark policy that positions IFCAs at the forefront of modern, evidence-driven fisheries management.
The strategy sets out a clear national pathway for integrating low-cost REM and AI technologies across England’s inshore fleet, helping to fill long-standing data gaps and strengthen the delivery of Fisheries Management Plans and the Joint Fisheries Statement. IFCAs will now lead coordinated trials and innovation projects, ensuring technologies are interoperable, proportionate, and developed transparently alongside the fishing industry.
This approach represents a significant shift: REM and AI will improve scientific understanding of activity at sea, enhance byelaw compliance, support adaptive management of Marine Protected Areas, and generate high-quality data to inform stock assessments and protect sensitive species. Importantly, the strategy highlights innovation and flexibility, recognising that early-stage technologies may evolve, but the learning gained will be invaluable.
For IFCAs, this is a major policy milestone. It strengthens our national role, supports sustainable inshore fisheries, and ensures our coastal communities benefit from world-class, future-ready fisheries management.
